Transportation from Cancun to Playa del Carmen

The distance between Cancun and Playa del Carmen is only 68 kilometers (42 miles), making it a relatively short trip. The best way to travel between these two destinations is obviously by road. There are several ways to do so, depending on your budget and how independent you want to be during the trip.

ADO Buses

The most affordable way to travel from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is by Autobuses ADO.

The journey takes about an hour and costs around 70 MXN (3.5 USD) per person. The disadvantage is that you still need to get to the airport from where the buses go, or to the bus terminal in the city. Although it’s the cheapest way to travel on this route, you may get discouraged by the lack of flexibility.

Taxis

Another option is to take a taxi from Cancun to Playa del Carmen. Taxis are readily available at the airport and throughout Cancun.

Taxis are more expensive than buses but offer greater flexibility and comfort. The journey takes about 45 minutes if you don’t make any stops and costs around 800-1000 MXN (40-50 USD) one way, depending on the type of taxi you choose.

Private Driver

If you prefer a more comfortable and convenient option, you can book a private transfer from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Private Drivers are more expensive than buses or taxis but this option offers more comfort and flexibility than a taxi, as you can choose the type of vehicle and schedule your pick-up time.

The journey takes about 45 minutes if there is no traffic, and costs around 1000-1500 MXN (50-75 USD), depending on the size of the vehicle you choose. It is definitely the most expensive option but worth considering for comfort, safety, and personalized service.

Rent a Car

Renting a car is a popular option for those who want to explore the area at their own pace.

The cost of renting a car can vary depending on the provider and the type of vehicle. On average, you can expect to pay around $40-50 USD per day for a compact car. The direct travel time is the same as by taxi or with a private driver— about 45 minutes.

Advantages of renting a car include the flexibility to explore the area on your own schedule and the ability to visit attractions that are off the beaten path. Disadvantages include the cost of renting a car and the need to navigate unfamiliar roads.

There is also a new train system under construction — The Tren Maya. It is set to connect Cancun to other major cities in the Yucatan Peninsula, including Playa del Carmen. It will probably be operational in December 2023, but the cost and travel time are not yet known.

Still, if you want to enjoy all the attractions on your way from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, choose the option that will give you the greatest flexibility.

This lively attraction is located just outside of Cancun, about 25 minutes by car from the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Xoximilco features colorful boats floating along the canals, just like the famous Xochimilco canals of Mexico City. You can hop on board a trajinera, which is a gondola-like boat, and enjoy traditional music, food, and drinks while taking in the beautiful scenery of the canals and surrounding jungle. Crococun Zoo is a unique and interactive small zoo located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen and a must-visit attraction for animal lovers and families with children.

The zoo specializes in the conservation and rehabilitation of crocodiles, and visitors to the zoo can learn about these fascinating reptiles up close. Very close, You will be able to hold and pet baby crocodiles, making for a memorable and exciting experience, and even walk among adult crocodiles if you are brave enough.

This scenic route takes you through a series of about 20 stunning underground caves and swimming holes, called cenotes, that are scattered throughout the jungle.
