About Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is an ancient place. It was already a Mayan sanctuary of the goddess Ixchel when the Spaniards arrived there in 1517.

Ixchel was the goddess of the moon, happiness, fertility, and medicine and it is believed that she lived on the island a long time ago together with her court of women.

When the Spaniards got there they discovered many statues of the goddess and named the island Isla Mujeres that means the island of women.

The island is very small and extends only for 5 miles long and is just half a mile wide. Therefore, it will be very easy for you to go around the island in just a few hours, mabye in a day.

The main activities and things to do in Isla Mujeres are:

  • Enjoying the stunning beaches
  • Snorkelking and scuba diving
  • Strolling through its colorful streets
  • Havng fun at the beach clubs and bars

Isla Mujeres is located across Cancun and you can easily see it from the coast on a sunny day.
